H2loop’s main objective is to demonstrate an energy- and cost-efficient on-site hydrogen production, allowing a successful and competitive decarbonisation of the European steel industry.

This overall objective can be broken down to several measurable and verifiable key exploitable results (KER) of the project which are fully in line with the SMART principle:

  • KER 1) Modular oxygen carriers (OCs) with high oxygen exchange rate and long-term stability (>10 years) to enable chemical looping in industrial scale
  • KER 2) Demonstration of emission-free CLH hydrogen production for at least 1 year with efficiency in the range of 80 % at >99 % hydrogen purity
  • KER 3) CLH demo plant with 24/7 operation in closed-loop control and operator-assistance system enabled by real-time, low power consumption Edge AI and soft sensors
  • KER 4) Process integration concepts for CLH process and products including energy efficiency evaluation and LCA

KER 5) Scale-up design and business plan for full industrial roll-out in steel industry
